Beowulf Characterization Essay - Free Essay Example
Beowulf Characterization Essay Evil monsters, greedy dragons, and heroes as strong as a bear can all be found in the literary masterpiece, Beowulf. This book is a classic fantasy that can be enjoyed by all ages. The book is about the main character Beowulf, a strong king who goes through many challenges during his lengthy rule of the Geats. He was a good king who always held his ground and fought for what was right. Beowulfââ¬â¢s character shines the brightest during combat, which can be seen in the fights with Grendel, Grendels mother, and the Dragon. The battle with Grendel was the first one in the book and introduced us to Beowulfs character qualities. Grendel was a monster who descended from ââ¬Å"Cains Clan.â⬠He terrorized the Danes for 12 years before he was slayed. He was described as being, ââ¬Å"warped in the shape of a man, moves beyond the pale bigger than any man, an unnatural birth called Grendel.â⬠(Heaney, 1351-54) Grendel was a monster that no one could seem to defeat. He was huge and powerful, unable to be hurt by any weapons. Grendel was feared by all except for Beowulf. Beowulf had heard of the monster and sought to defeat it. He went to the land of the Danes and talked to the king there about killing Grendel. The king, at first did not believe him until Beowulf boast about himself. This gave the king hope, and he agreed to let Beowulf try to kill the ââ¬Å"Dark Death-Shadowâ⬠During the night a violent battle ensues in which Beowulf ultimately comes out on top. The hero killed the beast with his bare hands by ripping off an arm from the fiend. This scene showed Beowulfs amazing strength. The victory however, is short lived as the mother of Grendel came to seek her revenge. Grendelââ¬â¢s mother is a foul beast looking for revenge. Beowulf knew something had to be done and quickly got ready for battle. Beowulf, with the king of the Danes and his company, marched to the marsh. There at the edge of the water Beowulf gave a confident speech. His final words were, ââ¬Å"with Hrunting (his sword) I shall gain glory or die.â⬠(Heaney, 491) Immediately after these bold words Beowulf, without hesitation, dove straight into the lake. This part of the book really captures the bravery of Beowulf. He blindly goes after the evil beast, swimming through the depths of itsââ¬â¢ territory without knowing where the fiend is, or what will happen. Beowulf gets briefly captured by Grendels mother but soon escapes her grasp, narrowly missing death because of his fine chain-mail armor. In Beowulfââ¬â¢s quick thinking, he finds and grabs an ancient relic from the lake bottom and kills Grendelââ¬â¢s mother with a slice to her neck. Meanwhile, the battle had taken so long that the king of the Danes had lost hope and left. Only a few of the villagers remained long enough to see his return. Beowulfs confidence and bravery led him on to rule a peaceful kingdom for 50 ye ars before another threat came about. Beowulf had one final battle against a mighty dragon. The dragon was the guardian of treasures within a mountain. Someone had enraged the dragon by stealing some of its treasure. This caused the dragon to seek revenge by wreaking havoc upon the Geats. Even in his old age, Beowulf knew he had to do something about the terrible monster. So off he went up the mountain with a shield of iron and his trusty sword. Beowulf faced off with the dragon but this time his luck had failed him, and his sword shattered into pieces on the monstersââ¬â¢ skull. Beowulf, not giving up, decided to try to kill the beast with his bare hands. This did not go well for him, and he started to lose the fight. Beowulfââ¬â¢s armed guard being so afraid of the dragon, fled from the scene. Only one man remained to help Beowulf and his name was Wiglaf. Wiglaf was a young warrior and this was his first time seeing combat. Despite this he bravely jumped in and stabbed the dragon in the belly. It was too late however, and Beowulf had been bit on the neck by the winged demon. Despite having blood rush down his body and poison running through his veins, Beowulf was still able to catch the dragon in the neck with a dagger. The dragon met his end, but sadly so did Beowulf. Beowulf fought for what was right. He stayed brave and confident in himself despite his old age. After a long fight and even longer life, the great hero spoke his final words Wiglaf. ââ¬Å"You are the last of us, the only one left of the waegmundings. Fate swept us away, sent my whole brave high-born clan to their final doom. Now I must follow them.â⬠(Heaney 2813-16) Beowulfs Character traits of bravery, confidence, and pride, can be seen in every battle the hero had. He killed the ââ¬Å"Dark Death-Shadowâ⬠Grendel. He dove into the deep waters to slay the revenge crazed mother of Grendel. In his old age he fought and defeated the dragon that had destroyed his throne and terrorized his country. Beowulfââ¬â¢s bravery and confidence can be seen in every battle. He could things without hesitation and with excellence. Though in the end he died protecting what he loved and worked so hard for, Beowulfââ¬â¢s story captures our imagination and teaches us to be brave and bold in all aspects of life.

White Noise By Don Delillo - 1832 Words
Literature of the eighties reflects a general atmosphere of fear at the timeââ¬âfear of the unfamiliar, of death and disease. Outside of the books from that era, we can see where in American society this fear came from, how it weaved around what was alien and strangled it. We can retrospectively watch as it manifests itself in the roots of the AIDS epidemic, an outbreak of disease that took tens of thousands of lives because its origins were unknown, and it affected those who were different from the majority, those who the majority could not understand. These thematic nuancesââ¬âthe unknown, the unfamiliar, the fear of these thingsââ¬ârepeatedly emerge in eightiesââ¬â¢ texts. Whether it be novels, plays or short stories, the strange, the diseased, the dead and the terror of a combination of these things is strikingly evident. White Noise by Don DeLillo, for example, provides its audience with a depiction of a landscape of fear in the eighties. It reflects how the avera ge American felt about impending doom, about society and the changes in society that were unknown to them. It provides a basis of understanding why later, when AIDS decimated almost an entire portion of a society, these average Americans abandoned their sick friends, family members or neighbors. Angels in America, a play by Tony Kushner, shows how this fear influenced the others, people made alien by their disease or sexual orientation. Essay on The Genius of the American Constitution - 1094 Words
ââ¬Å"When people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty.â⬠By 1787, the enlightened statesmen began to understand and accept the flaws of the Articles of Confederation. It was too weak and did not allow the new nationââ¬â¢s economy to thrive. The system under these articles failed to create a strong central government and even lacked a court system. One major weakness of the central government was that they could not tax the states and this lead to an uneven distribution of power, and the states became overwhelmingly powerful. The challenge was to write a new constitution that was strong enough to hold the country and states together, secure the rights of the people, and not allow a singleâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The judicial branch also has the job of deciding the application of a law and protecting laws form passing that are unconstitutional. Another separation of power was put into place in the legislative bran ch to solve the problem of big states vs small states. This problem would be solved by having two parts of congress, the senate and the House of Representatives. The senate would consist of two representatives or senators from each state, while the house representatives would vary from state to state according to population. The small states were happy in the senate because they had the same say as larger states, whereas in the house, larger states were happy because they had more votes. This protected against tyranny because not one state or representative could gain absolute power. Having three branches with separate powers defends against tyranny simply because instead of having one power such as the king of England, who made all of the decisions, there are multiple parts of the government working together to come to an agreeable solution. William Sherman published hispersonal memoirs in 1875, retired in 1883, and died in 1891. William Tecumseh Sherman, as you have read, was a verytalented and very successful man. He is remembered by manyaccomplishments, but probably most remembered by his famous March tothe sea. Shermans march to the sea was probably the most celebratedmilitary action, in which about sixty thousand men marched withSherman from Atlanta to the Atlantic ocean, then north through SouthCarolina destroying the last of the souths economic resources. Bedford Forrest was in Tennessee, and with Atlanta secured,Sherman dispatched George H. Thomas to Nashville to restore the orderthere. John B. Hood threatened Thomass supply line, and for about amonth, they both fought north of Atlanta. Sherman decided to do thecomplete opposite of what the strategic plan laid down by Grant sixmonths earlier had proposed to do. In that plan Grant had insistedthat Confederate armies were the first and foremost objectives forUnion strategy. What Sherman decided now was that he would completelyignore the Confederate armies and go for the spirit that sustainedthe Confederate nation itself, the homes, the property, the families, and the food of the Southern heartland. He would march for Savannah,Georgia and the seacoast, abandoning his own line of supply, and liveoff the land and harvests of the Georgia Country. Grant finallyapproved Shermans plan, so Sherman set off on his march eastward, smashing things to the sea. On November 15, 1864, Sherman began hism arch to the sea. I can make . . . Georgia howl! he promised. Sherman left Atlanta, setting it up in flames as they left, with 62,000 men, 55,000 of them on foot, 5,000 on cavalry horses, and about 2,000 riding artillery horses. It was an army of 218regiments, 184 of them from the West, and of these 155 were from theold Northwest Territory. This army was remembered as a lean and strongone. The bulk of the army was made up of Germans, Irish, Scotch, andEnglish. Sherman and his army arrived in Georgia where there was noopposition, and the march was very leisurely. The army fanned outwidely, covering a sixty mile span from one side to the other. Thearmy destroyed, demolished and crushed whatever got in their way, theland, homes, buildings, and people. Bridges, railroads, machine shops,warehouses- anything of this nature that was in Shamans path wasburned and destroyed. As a result of this march eliminatinga lot of the food to feed the Confederate army and its animals, thewhole Confederate war effort would become weaker and weaker andweaker. Sherman went on toward the sea while the Confederacy could donothing. .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 , .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .postImageUrl , .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 , .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1:hover , .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1:visited , .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1:active { border:0!important; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1:active , .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1 .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud91781395d7dc1dcd86c35ffba8598f1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Conflicts In Romantic Relationships EssayShermans march to the sea was a demonstration that theConfederacy could not protect its own. Many agree that Sherman was toobrutal and cruel during the march to the sea, but Sherman and his menwere effectively demolishing the Confederate homeland, and that wasall that mattered to Sherman. Accounting Essay Example Accounting Essay Accounting Essay Importance of IFRS Name: Course: Institution: Date: Accounting The Amazon site experienced an outage, which ended up affecting other websites and servers. The problem began when the services at Amazonââ¬â¢s elastic block store service were interrupted. The main problem was a memory leak in the system. The monitoring system also failed, leading to the outage. The technicians had replaced the data collection server. The failure of the monitoring system enhanced the memory leak, leading it to get out of control (Williams, 2012). The replaced server did not work with the system well because it failed to transmit its domain name system in the right way, and this meant that the message did not reach some servers. The elastic block store provides much needed services to the elastic compute cloud, because it provides it with storage space. The elastic block store is one of the components in elastic computer cloud. The elastic compute cloud is one of the most important services because it provides the computing and networking bandwidth for websites and web applications. Therefore, interruptions of this service caused major interruptions and outages on the websites relying on the cloud computing offered by elastic compute cloud. Some of the other websites that were affected because of this outage included Reddit, Heroku, Imgur, Minecraft, HipChat, and foursquare among others. Customers to these sites could not access them. The systems could not perform the customersââ¬â¢ request. Initially, the companyââ¬â¢s technicians were able to solve the problem in some areas, and the outage lasted for a few hours in most areas. However, the technicians were not able to resolve the problem, and the outages lasted for several more hours in many areas (Hutchinson, 2012). The problem had caused a lot of customer dissatisfaction after the outage. The company was able to find the main cause of the problem and they were able to resolve it, but not before affecting many customers in the process. The company initiated some measures, which it hoped would prevent such problems from happening in future. Among the measures that the company took, include developing a monitoring system that will alert the system when there is such a problem. The new system will sound the alarm, whenever there is a memory leak in the system. The company had to find ways of solving the problem with the memory leak. This process took some time, and some servers were down for more than three days, before the technicians could resolve the problem (Williams, 2012) One has to know the root cause of the problem when dealing with web outages. Some technicians fail at identifying the main cause and they end up taking a longer time to deal with the problem. Websites offer many valuable functions for companies. Companies have to find ways of preventing web outages, detecting them when they are about to occur, and dealing with the outages whenever they occur. One way to prevent web outages is to use an online processing system that operates in real time. This will reduce the chances caused by improper transmission within the system, and the server will get all the information (Gelinas, et al., 2011). Companies can depend on the customers input to detect whether there are any problems with the system. They can provide the needed space where the customers report bad experiences with the server. Most of the problems that the customers complain about may seem minor, but reporting them and looking into them earlier will prevent a small problem from escala ting. Companies need to use flexible technologies, which will allow for any changes within the system, and this will solve any future problems if the company decides to increase the amount of input data or to increasing processing (Croll Power, 2009). Other measures include encouraging customers to use web caches and reducing the server load. Looking for the less obvious problems, such as the functioning of the domain name systems is a sure way of preventing possible outages (Safe Resolve, 2011) References Croll, A., Power, S. (2009). Ethics - Essay Example Walzer approaches the ethics of war using Utilitarianism. The theory approaches ethics by defining morals by use of actions. The actions can be used to define what is wrong or right. In theory, an action that yields beneficial consequences is as right or moral while actions leading to negative results are as wrong. The theory is the consequentialist theory because it focuses on the outcome of actions rather than the action themselves. The theory holds that any action is by the extent of benefits or harms it is within the society. According to the theory, the greater good means greater happiness, and the moral duty of the individual is to maximize human happiness. The problem with the theory is; the development of individuality, and encouraging the use of immoral actions to achieve success. According to Walzer, the humanitarian approach employed in the world has not been successful due to the several challenges associated with human behavior. In fact, the society is into the right win g and the liberal as recorded in the book Arguing About War. The 20th century is with a simple lesson on politics, which focuses on motivation for political action. The most lethal concept in the era is the ideology which is different from the accepted or focus on the interests of the nation. The desire for wealth or money, power ignoble and devotees to the criminal excess are the product of shifting ideologies. In fact, the challenge in the society is the war between values or values against social pressures and desire for wealth and money. The development of the concept of international security is a product of the war study and its effect on the society. The book by Walzer covers the contemporary issues associated with war and the impact of the various issues and the role of humanitarian intervention. It describes accurately, the challenges faced by country and organization seeking to help or support the society and the impact of global politics in the whole process. Humanitarian intervention is an armed intervention without agreement of the other state to which the invasion occurs. In fact, it focuses on combating humanitarian disaster rather than invasion based on countryââ¬â¢s interest. The focus of the humanitarian intervention is to capture or reduce large-scale violation of human rights with the focus being on stopping the violation of human rights. The challenge posed by the process is massive. However, Michael Walzer states that human intervention is when it responds to the need of the citizens or acts that shock moral conscience of mankind. In other words, states cannot kill or attack citizens from other states legitimately, not even within their borders are they allowed to do the same. Despite the existence of justifiable ground for humanitarian intervention, the level or point at which human intervention occurs is an issue of great debate. In fact, agreement has never been reached on whether to have a standard approach or evaluate the situatio ns independently. However, according to Walzer human intervention has improved the level of security and protection of human rights within the society. The first obligation of the government is to offer security, but it may become unattainable leading to the need for humanitarian intervention. After the world war, the world plunged into a state of uncertainty. Instead of peace, there were minor conflicts within the stateââ¬â¢s leading to genocide and ethnic cleansing. However, the challenge of the new threats led to the development of various approaches to
